Summary

A one-year study of the microbial agents associated with infectious acute diarrhea in children under five years of age in a high-altitude tropical setting (Facatativá, Colombia), designed to characterize viral, bacterial and parasitic contributions in an equatorial climate with mild seasonal changes.

Methods

Stool samples from 300 children under 5 years of age were analyzed throughout a one-year period. Bacteria and intestinal parasites were identified by routine methods; viruses were detected and typed by enzyme immunoassay (EIA) and polymerase chain reaction (PCR), covering group A and group C Rotavirus, Calicivirus, Human Astrovirus and enteric Adenovirus.

Key findings

20.6% of cases were associated with bacteria, 9% with parasites and 40% with viruses. Group C Rotavirus was found in 20.2% of cases, group A Rotavirus in 13% and Calicivirus in 10%. Viral-associated diarrhea was more frequent between November and April (p<0.007), while bacterial and parasitic cases predominated between May and October. The high Group C Rotavirus prevalence was highlighted as unusually elevated compared to previous international reports.

Summary

An original research article, in Spanish, examining whether temperature, humidity and precipitation influenced the prevalence and electrophoretic patterns of rotavirus and adenovirus in children under four years of age with acute diarrhea in Bogotá, Colombia — a tropical highland city with limited seasonal variation.

Methods

494 diarrheal stool samples were collected across five pediatric centers in Bogotá between June 1996 and June 1998. All samples were screened for rotavirus by ELISA (Kallestad); 209 were also tested for adenovirus (Dako). Of the rotavirus-positive samples, 104 were selected for electropherotyping by polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis. Climatic variables were obtained from IDEAM monthly reports and analyzed by regression.

Key findings

Rotavirus prevalence was 32% and adenovirus prevalence 18.5%. Six distinct rotavirus electropherotypes were identified, indicating moderate genetic variability. The studied climatic variables did not correlate with viral prevalence or with electrophoretic pattern distribution, consistent with an endemic behavior of enteric viruses in equatorial tropical zones where seasonal contrasts are limited.
